Films new for the Fourth of July and opening Friday


A list of movies already open and those opening on Friday.

Opened Wednesday

“Despicable Me 2”: In this sequel to the 2010 animated comedy, criminal mastermind Gru wants to get a date. It opened Wednesday at several theaters (at many in 3D).

“Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain”: A documentary that essentially repackages one of the comedian’s sold-out stand-up sets at Madison Square Garden. It also opened Wednesday at several theaters.

“The Lone Ranger”: The big-budget not-quite-action, not-quite-comedy picture starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. It also opened Wednesday at several theaters.

Opening Friday

“Berberian Sound Studio”: A thriller set in an Italian postproduction studio in 1976 that features Toby Jones as a British sound engineer. It opens Friday at the Northwest Film Forum.

“Byzantium”: A vampire movie starring Gemma Arterton and Saoirse Ronan. It opens Friday at the Varsity.

“Downloaded”: A documentary that explores the “downloading revolution.” It opens Friday at the Grand Illusion.

“A Hijacking”: A thriller about Somali pirates taking over a Danish cargo ship in the Indian Ocean. It opens Friday at the Harvard Exit.

“Unfinished Song”: Paul Andrew Williams’ story of a couple (Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave) in the twilight years of their marriage. It opens Friday at the Seven Gables.
