Peeps Contest winners 2013

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a comet — made entirely of Peeps. Duck and cover!

For the past several weeks, The Seattle Times has been showered with entries to the 2013 Peeps Contest, co-presented with Bartell Drugs. Readers have molded, skewered and hot-glued animal-shaped marshmallow treats into hundreds of colorful combinations, with titles like “Peepton Abbey” and “The Peepal Conclave Convenes to Elect the Next Peep.”

At stake this year were hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards from Bartell Drugs.

Our panel of judges had a difficult time choosing prize winners from among the plethora of Peeps that seemingly fell from the sky. But here they are:

■ $500 Grand Prize (adult): “Peep Impact,” by R.K. Cobban, of Renton; Shahmin Mahmood, Renton; and Molly Owen, Seattle.

■ $500 Grand Prize (13 and under): “Peeps De Resistance,” by Hannah Sivertson, 12, Bothell, with assistance from Karen Lee.

■ $200 Runner-up (adult): “Peepitecture: Seattle Central Peep Library,” by Melody Leung, Mercer Island; Nadia Melim, West Seattle; and Marc Tegen, West Seattle.

■ $200 Runner-up (13 and under): “Viking Peeps Attack!,” by Carl Dutton, 13, Seattle.

■ $50 Most elaborate: “Thank You For Being a Peep,” by Crystal Rodriguez and Jessica Fraser, Shelton, Wash.

■ $50 Most enthusiastic: Numerous entries — including “Pageant Peeps,” pictured — by the Hiatt family, Brier.
