Seahawks vice president John Idzik named Jets' general manager

By Danny O'Neil
Seattle Times staff reporter

John Idzik, the Seahawks' vice president the past five years, was hired as the Jets' general manager on Friday.

Idzik has been with the Seahawks since 2007, when he was hired by Tim Ruskell to serve as vice president of football operations. Idzik remained with the team after Ruskell resigned, and in the past three years has been primarily in charge of managing Seattle's salary cap.

Idzik was involved in the Seahawks' change of front-office structure in 2010 after the hiring of Pete Carroll. Tod Leiweke, then the team's CEO, created a structure in which three people — Idzik, Carroll and general manager John Schneider — reported to the CEO rather than the previous chain of command in which coaches and vice presidents reported to the president.

After Idzik's departure, the Seahawks' primary personnel executives remain in place with Schneider, the GM, Tag Ribary, director of player personnel, and Scot McCloughan, who is a senior personnel executive.
