Toronto's Jose Bautista will have season-ending surgery on left wrist

NEW YORK — Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista will have season-ending surgery to stabilize a tendon in his left wrist.

Bautista said before Tuesday night's game against the New York Yankees that the recovery period is three to four months and he would be ready to play long before the start of spring training next year.

"There's just too much instability in that tendon and it got to the point where risking injuring the tendon was not worth it," Bautista said. "That's why we're opting to do it now."

Meanwhile, Blue Jays prospect Marcus Stroman, the No. 22 pick in this year's amateur draft, was suspended 50 games for violating baseball's minor-league drug program.

Stroman, a right-hander with Class AA New Hampshire, tested positive for Methylhexaneamine, a banned stimulant.

• The Chicago Cubs and shortstop Starlin Castro have agreed to a seven-year $60 million contract with a club option for 2020.

The 22-year-old Castro is a two-time All-Star and in just his second full major-league season. He led the National League in hits with 207 last season. Since making his major-league debut on May 7, 2010, Castro has more hits than any player in the NL with 486.

• Infielder Sean Rodriguez won't be rejoining Tampa Bay later this week as expected after he broke his right hand while punching a locker at Class AAA Durham.

• Major League Baseball and ESPN extended their television contract through 2021. The new combined deal is expected to be worth about $700 million a year over eight years. It combines rights for TV, radio, digital and international that had been separate. The previous contracts were worth close to $360 million a year combined.

• The Minnesota Twins will host the 2014 All-Star Game at Target Field, The Associated Press reported.
