AUBURN — Mike Man's Gold proved his career-debut victory was no fluke, hanging on for a half-length victory over Finallygotabentley to win the $50,000 Premio Esmeralda Stakes at Emerald Downs on Sunday.
Mike Man's Gold, a 2-year-old colt, rallied from last earlier in the month to beat Finallygotabentley at 20-1. He still didn't get a lot of respect from the bettors Sunday, going off at 9-1 in an eight-horse field and paying $20.20 to win.
Jockey Javier Matias had Mike Man's Gold in third place early. They took command before the stretch and opened up a nice lead before holding off a fast-closing Finallygotabentley.
Mike Man's Gold ran 6 furlongs in 1 minute, 10.04 seconds.
