Bat warning from Washington Health Department

The state Health Department says three people in Washington have had to be treated this year for exposure to rabid bats.

In the most recent case last week in Snohomish County a person was scratched on the arm by a bat.

Spokeswoman Julie Graham says it happened outdoors. This is the time of year when bats are most active.

It you are scratched or bitten by a bat or you wake up and find a bat in your room, the department recommends trying to catch the bat without touching it. If the bat tests clear of the deadly virus, you may not have to be treated.

Otherwise, anyone who is bitten or exposed to a bat should be evaluated for a two-week series of shots.
