Local Books: Bike rides and car trips — just in time for summer

"75 Classic Rides Washington: The Best Road Biking Routes" by Mike McQuaide (The Mountaineers Books, $24.95). The Bellingham author and frequent contributor to The Seattle Times offers a comprehensive guidebook divided into seven regions of the state with map routes, level of difficulty, road conditions and other tips including short descriptions of what you will see. Plus, with the purchase of the book, you get downloadable cue sheets to take with you.

"Washington Wild Roads: 80 Scenic Drives to Camping, Hiking Trails, and Adventures" by Seabury Blair Jr. (Sasquatch Books, $18.95). Detailed drives with ratings, distance and maps to the prettiest places in the state, from the best views of mountains and lakes to flower-filled meadows and sagebrush prairies. The author is a former columnist for the Bremerton Sun and lives in Spokane.

"The Lost Code" by Kevin Emerson (Katherine Tegen, $17.99). For ages 13 and up: Owen is a dweeb — until he almost drowns and grows gills. Now he's part of the cool group, but it might end up getting him killed in this eco-thriller with "just the right amount of suspense, adventure, science fiction, fantasy and romance, but without the brutal violence found in other stories," according to Voice of Youth Advocates. The dystopian novel is Book One of the Atlanteans series by the Seattle author.

"Revived" by Cat Patrick (Little, Brown, $17.99). For ages 14 and up: Daisy has been Revived — brought back from death — five times as part of a secret government experiment. Now 15, she'd just like to be normal, with a real boyfriend. She thought the drug was to save lives, but maybe there's a more sinister motive in this sci-fi novel by a Snoqualmie author.
