Tacoma boxer Jonte Willis on title-bout undercard in California

Tacoma heavyweight boxer Jonte Willis will square off against undefeated Andy Ruiz Jr. on the undercard of the Nonita Donaire-Jeffrey Mathebulas WBO/IBF super-bantamweight unification title match at 7 p.m. Saturday in Carson, Calif. The bouts will be televised on HBO.

Willis (8-3, 3 KOs), 28, is coming off two tough fights in the past eight months. He lost to undefeated Vincent Thompson of Federal Way in an eighth-round technical decision at the Emerald Queen Casino, then in a controversial split decision in Moscow to Kazakh Denis Bakhtov.

"Jonte is a warrior, and he has a lot of confidence in himself," said manager Bill McDonald of Everett.

Ruiz (14-0, 8 KOs) is among the top heavyweight fighters in Mexico.
