Jackson apologizes for comments

By Seattle Times news services

BOSTON — Alex Rodriguez might be separated from Reggie Jackson by a couple of generations in Yankees lore, but the "Lightning Rod" got a taste of what it was like to be Jackson's teammate in the mid-1970s and didn't much like it, judging from his reaction Friday night at Fenway Park.

An official said Jackson has apologized and is working to make things right within the organization and with others he might have offended.

Jackson stirred up controversy by telling Sports Illustrated that A-Rod's admission of performance-enhancing drug use might preclude him the Hall of Fame despite his 642 home runs.

Meeting briefly before the game against the Red Sox, Rodriguez said of Jackson: "That's funny. With friends like that, who needs enemies."

Rodriguez, who has long considered Jackson a friend, said the content of their talk will remain private.

Notes

• Philadelpha star first baseman Ryan Howard doubled in his first at-bat and was 2 for 4 in his first game since rupturing his left Achilles tendon on the final swing in a postseason-elimination loss to St. Louis last October.

• Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton is day to day after leaving a game against the Minnesota Twins with lower-back spasms.

• St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was placed on bereavement leave after a death in the family and will miss next week's All-Star Game. Teammate Matt Holliday will replace him on the National League roster.

• Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia went on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended right thumb.

• Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster (back) is set to start Sunday's game against the New York Mets.

Giancarlo Stanton was out of the Miami Marlins' lineup for the fourth straight game with a right-knee injury, but expects to play Saturday and be a full participant for next week's All-Star Game, including the home-run derby.
