The Anderson & Hester/Seattle Times computer rankings, provided by Jeff Anderson and Chris Hester, are used before the bowl season to help determine which two teams will play for the national championship.
The rankings are distinct in four ways:
1. They compute the most accurate
strength-of-schedule ratings -- each team's opponents and its opponents' opponents are judged
not only by their records but also their conference's strength.
2. Using these schedule ratings, teams are ranked solely upon their success in defeating quality opponents, rather than upon margin of victory.
3. In premiering after the season's fifth week, rankings reward actual accomplishments, not perceived potential.
4. These rankings provide the most accurate and informative conference ratings -- each conference is rated according to its out-of-conference record and the difficulty of its out-of-conference schedule.
