Get your pet licensed without getting dinged with late fees

Have the dog and cat out and about wearing expired tags? Forget to license your pot-bellied pig or miniature goat?

Through April 30 you can bring those licenses up to date or buy new tags for pets not already licensed without getting hit with late fees or other penalties that can add up to hundreds of dollars.

The license amnesty is open to pet owners in Seattle, Federal Way, Bothell and most of King County.

Pet licenses serve several purposes. If a pet is found or turned into a shelter, the license information can be used to reunite the animal with its owner. The license fees also support adoption programs, foster care, spaying and neutering, enforcement and community outreach.

License rates and even what animals need to be licensed vary depending on where you live. Click on the websites for detailed information for your area.

The cat's meow: Fun events for fans of felines

It's a purrfectly good time of year for those that love cats. Here's a roundup of events and programs including the Average Joe Cat Show (check out the photo contest), Fabulous Felines adoption event and a kitten shower.

Feline Fridays: Every Friday, Kitsap Humane Society, 9167 Dickey Road N.W., Silverdale. Adoption fees are dropped for cats 1 year and older at the shelter. There is a $30 microchip ID fee.

Fabulous Felines: Noon-3 p.m. April 13, Belltown Community Center, 415 Bell St., Seattle. This Seattle Animal Shelter adoption event showcases cats and kittens that are ready to move from foster care to forever homes. Adoption prices ($45-$135 plus applicable license fees) include initial vaccinations, deworming, testing for feline leukemia, microchip ID and spaying or neutering.

Kitten Shower and Foster Program Open House: 1 p.m. April 20, Kitsap Humane Society, 9167 Dickey Road N.W., Silverdale. Average Joe Cat Show: May 4, Spartan Recreation Center, 202 N.E. 185th St., Shoreline. Purrfect Pals' 10th annual event celebrates our feline friends with contests, a silent auction and vendor booths. The photo contest captures cats in their finest and sometimes not so fine moments.
