The Roosevelt High School boys soccer team was just good enough to finish in a tie for fourth place in the KingCo 4A regular-season standings.

Now, peaking at the right time, the Roughriders (13-5-2) are poised to be top-four or better finish in the Class 4A state playoffs.

Calling it flipping the switch.

So what has changed since Roosevelt opened league play 1-4-0 and finished 5-5-0 for 15 points to be knotted with Issaquah and Redmond for fourth in KingCo 4A?

“I think KingCo 4A is one of the toughest leagues and anyone could beat anybody,” said Roosevelt coach Val Seid, who is in his fourth season. “There’s a lot of parity between our top teams and our bottom teams. Also, we played pretty much half of our games with up to 12 of our 18 players gone for various reasons.

“We had players gone for a 2 ½-week stretch.”

Roosevelt played without ineligible players, players who took extended vacations near spring break, five players who took part in the school’s “Hands For A Bridge” social issues program where students travel to South Africa and North Ireland and one player (starting outside back Rodrigo Arambula) who left the country to visit an ill relative.

The Roughriders got their roster back to full strength just prior to state after enduring the player drought from April 9-30 by plugging in junior varsity players.

“It wasn’t until state that we had our complete roster back,” said Seid, whose team went 4-1-0 during the critical stretch. “It’s been an interesting season, to say the least. We didn’t have any injuries, ironically.”

It’s also been a memorable one.

Roosevelt seeks to make school history and win its first state semifinal match on Friday when it faces Union of Vancouver (15-2-4) at 8 p.m. at Puyallup’s Sparks Stadium.

Had the Roughriders lost their KingCo 4A finale to Ballard (1-9-0) (instead of winning 3-2) on April 30 or Newport beat Woodinville(3-7-0) (instead of losing 1-0) on April 30, it would have been the end of the 2013 season for them. Either combination would have knocked Roosevelt out of the postseason and out of one of the top-six qualifying spots.

“We got lucky by the skin of our teeth,” said Seid, who have won seven matches in a row currently. “Going into that last game, Newport was in third place and, by losing, they got knocked out completely. We moved some players around and we changed our system as we struggled with losing those players.

“It’s a group of guys that all they do is work.”

The Roughriders settled for a school-best fourth place finish by going 0-3 in their previous three state semifinal appearances in 1985, 1990 and 2005.

In 2005, Roosevelt fell in the 4A semis 2-1 in overtime shootout (4-3 in penalty kicks) to eventual state champion Jefferson.

Last year, the Roughriders were bounced from the state playoffs in the first round by eventual 4A state champion Skyview 4-1.

“Last year we made Roosevelt history by winning the KingCo [4A] championship [beating Skyline 2-1 in overtime shootout], and then we lost in the first round,” said Seid, whose team went 12-4-1 in 2012. “We want to go in Friday and create history for Roosevelt again. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. But it’s like let’s do something for the school that’s never been done.”

Roosevelt lost seven seniors – including four starters -- from the 2012 squad, but it didn’t seem affect the momentum that the team built.

“When two of our seniors came back for the Ballard game after being gone, you could just tell their leadership was there,” Seid said. “We have guys on the bench who know their role and support others.”

The Roughriders play a team style where opponents don’t fear just one or two players. Senior forward/midfielder Eric Conte leads the team with 10 goals and two assists and defender Charlie Spurr and forward/midfielder Danny South have nine goals each.

South stepped up with a hat trick in the Roughriders’ 3-1 state quarterfinal win at Richland on Friday.

“The boys want to work hard together and we don’t have that fancy player that teams have to look out for,” Seid said. “We call ourselves a blue-collar team. We always have our future in front of us.”

Ignited on offense, Roosevelt has outscored foes 16-7 during its seven-math win streak.

Now, the Roughriders don’t really care how they do it. They just want two more victories and the school’s first state title in boys soccer.

Lone local unbeaten

Jefferson (16-0-4, SPSL 4A) remains as the only local team who is still unbeaten overall. The Raiders snuck past Inglemoor 1-0 on Saturday reach the Class 4A state semifinals and face Snohomish (19-1-0) on Friday at 6 p.m. at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Washington state computer rankings

Bonney Lake (3A) and Seattle Christian (1A) are the local teams who top their respective classes in the Washington state computer rankings on May 12 in the final rankings prior to the state playoffs. ScoreCzar and goalWA.net have entered into a partnership for these rankings.

Jumbled at the top of the 3A ranks are local teams No. 2 Shorewood, No. 3 Liberty of Issaquah, No. 4 Hazen, No. 5 Chief Sealth (last week’s No.1), No. 7 Lakeside, No. 9 Shorecrest and No. 10 Kennedy Catholic following top-rated Bonney Lake. Also near the top are No. 13 Glacier Peak, No. 14 Mount Si, No. 15 Juanita and No. 16 Mercer Island.

National rankings picture

The fourth spring boys soccer rankings from National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) came out on Tuesday, May 14 and is current. Three teams from Washington state appear in the top 20 and another is in the “also receiving votes” section. Snohomish (19-1-0) in Class 4A leads Washington schools at No. 5, Jefferson (4A) checks in at No. 12, Federal Way (4A) at No. 16 and Stadium of Tacoma (4A) in the “also receiving votes” section. The next set of spring rankings is due out Tuesday, May 14. The final poll of the spring is set to be released on June 18. The current rankings link is below:

State softball brackets now available

I just got back from covering the final day of the West Central District 4A, 3A and 2A softball tournaments in Spanaway.

You can find my story here.

I didn't get a chance to do the 4A title game justice. It started almost an hour late and got over five minutes before my deadline. It looked as though Emerald Ridge might lose for the first time this season, down 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh against Camas. But the Jaguars rallied for a 2-1 victory.

I was impressed with both teams and think they have to be considered contenders for the state title this weekend in Spokane.

The 3A final was kind of disappointing, since Peninsula went with a mostly JV lineup to rest starters and give bench players some tournament experience and Enumclaw rolled, 14-0 in five. Enumclaw led 10-0 after one inning and also subbed freely.

But that shouldn't take away from a fine tournament by the Hornets.

The 2A title went to White River, 4-0 over Fife -- thanks to a grand slam by Brooklyn Isaacs.

So, now the state-tournament field are set and the brackets are up on the WIAA website: 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B.

Click on the classification you are interested in for the complete bracket. Note that nationally ranked Woodinville, the defending 4A state champion, opens against Skyview of Vancouver -- and that's no gimmee.

Also note the absence of Walla Walla, which won the 2011 title and lost to Woodinvillle in last year's final. The Blue Devils failed to advance, losing to Central Valley and Richland in the Eastern Regional tourney.

I'll have more on the matchups later this week, particularly in 4A, 3A and 2A, but that's it for tonight.

Triple Play: Softball notes on area 4A, 3A and 2A district tournaments

I’m changing things up a bit in this edition of Triple Play. Since most of the district tournaments in the area are underway, I’m going to catch you up on which teams have clinched state berths and which ones are still in the running, for 4A, 3A and 2A.

I’ll link you to the brackets and also updated the latest national rankings.

So here we go:

Class 4A

It’s official: the Woodinville Falcons will get the chance to defend their state title. They beat Redmond in the semifinals of the KingCo tournament yesterday, 12-4, to advance to Friday’s championship game and clinch a state berth.

That is probably not surprising to many, if any (no disrespect to Redmond, but Woodinville is considered one of the top teams in the country). After the Mustangs put up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, the Falcons answered with nine in the bottom half and added three more in the second.

Madi Schreyer struck out 10 and got plenty of offensive help as the Falcons put together 11 hits – including a double by Alyssa O’Farrell, who drove in four runs.

A bit more surprising is the other KingCo finalist – Bothell. The Cougars, which finished fourth in the Crest Division, opened the tournament with a 6-5 upset victory over Newport, the Crown Division champion. In the semis, they took down Inglemoor, a team they had lost to twice during the regular season.

Bothell broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kelsie Morgan went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs and Sammy Morris, who led the league in hitting with a .673 average, also had three hits.

The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Inglemoor.

Consolation play at Inglemoor continues today as Redmond plays Newport at 4 p.m. and Inglemoor faces Ballard at 6. Those winners square off Friday at 5 p.m. in another loser-out game. The survivor of that one plays the No. 3 team out of the Northwest District tournament Saturday at 2 p.m. for a final state berth. You can find the KingCo bracket here.

Speaking of the Northwest tourney, let’s jump there. Lake Stevens and Arlington are assured of state berths after semifinal victories on Tuesday. Both beat division champs as Lake Stevens took down Snohomish, 5-3, and Arlington blanked Cascade, 13-0.

The title game is today at 5 p.m. at Sky River Park in Monroe. Before that, at 3 p.m., there are a pair of loser-out games -- Jackson vs. Cascade and Kamiak vs. Snohomish. Those winners then play 15 minutes later for third place, and the right to play the No. 3 KingCo team on Saturday.

The West Central District tourney is tomorrow at Saturday at Sprinker Recreation center in Spanaway, and that’s where I will be. Half of the 4A state qualifiers come out of this massive tournament, which brings together the top teams from the SPSL, Narrows and Greater St. Helen’s League. Check out the bracket here.

Unbeaten Emerald Ridge won the SPSL title over Tahoma and opens tourney play at noon against Battle Ground, the No. 3 GSHL qualifier. If the Jags win, that could set up a dynamite quarterfinal against Bellarmine Prep or Kentlake. Bellarmine, which lost the district title game last year to Rogers, reached the Narrows League final before losing 10-2 to South Kitsap in nine innings.

SK opens at 10 a.m. against Mount Rainier, which can be dangerous with Jasmin Fullmore on the mound. Tahoma starts with Gig Harbor, while Skyview (the GSHL champ) faces Bethel – both at 10 a.m.

Semifinals are at 1 p.m. Saturday and the title game at 5.

Class 3A

It’s been a bit of a while Sea-King District tourney thus far – thanks to surprising Interlake. The Saints, who won the West Central 2A tourney last year, upset Bainbridge in the quarterfinals yesterday, 9-3, to clinch a state berth. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any highlights. Juanita, Holy Names and Bishop Blanchet have also punched their tickets to state.

Interlake finished just fourth in KingCo 3A/2A, but opened district play with a 13-3 win over West Seattle. The Saints will see if they can play giant killers again today as they face Holy Names in the semifinals at 2 p.m. The Cougars edged Mount Si yesterday, 7-6, after enjoying a first-round bye. The other semi pairs Juanita against Bishop Blanchet, also at 2 p.m. Juanita, the KingCo 3A champ, rolled past Seattle Prep yesterday, 15-5, while Blanchet nipped Mercer Island, 7-6.

Blanchet knocked off Holy Names in the Metro League semifinals last week, the Cougars’ first loss against a 3A team all season(their other defeat came against Walla Walla, which won the 4A state title in 2011 and was second last year).

Only one more state berth from this tournament is available. Bainbridge will look to make it the hard way again, but must win two straight today. The Spartans play Mount Si at 2 p.m. MI and Seattle Prep also play a loser-out game at 2, then the game for that fifth spot is scheduled for 4 p.m. Check out the bracket here.

Now over to the Northwest District tourney, which you can follow here.

After finishing fourth in the WesCo 3A South, Mountlake Terrace is hot at the right time and secured a state berth with a 4-3 win semifinal win over Shorecrest Tuesday. Terrace beat Marysville-Pilchuck 6-4 in the opening round and plays Meadowdale today for the title at 6 p.m. at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett.

Meadowdale advanced with wins over Oak Harbor, 7-2, and Glacier Peak, 6-3.

Marysville, which won the WesCo North, is out with back-to-back losses to Terrace and Everett, 4-3.

One more state berth is on the line today with four teams still alive. It will be Everett vs. Glacier Peak and Ferndale vs. Shorecrest, both at 4 p.m. The winners then battle for that last berth at 6 p.m.

The West Central 3A tourney is Friday-Saturday at Sprinker and has six state berths up for grabs. Enumclaw and Bonney Lake finished 1-2 out of the SPSL/Seamount sub-district tournament and enjoy first-round byes along with Wilson of Tacoma (Narrows No. 1) and Prairie (Greater St. Helen’s No. 1). Wilson, third at state last year, is coming on strong after finishing third in the Narrows during the regular season. Prairie is an annual contender. The complete bracket is here.

Class 2A

Lake Washington still has a shot at qualifying for state, but must win a pair of loser-out games in the Northwest District tournament in Lynden. The Kangs, who shared the KingCo 3A/2A regular-season title with Juanita (but lost twice to the Rebels), nearly nabbed that berth in the semifinals Wednesday, but fell 8-7 to Granite Falls.

LW, which beat Anacortes in the first round, 9-4, now plays Lakewood tomorrow at 4 p.m. Lakewood lost its opener to Sedro-Woolley, 10-1, then eliminated Cedarcrest, 12-2. Sedro-Woolley and Anacortes clash in the other loser-out game at 4 p.m., then the third-place contest is set at 6:30 p.m. You can find the bracket here.

Five state qualifiers will come out of the West Central District at Sprinker, again with a Friday-Saturday schedule. White River is the No. 1 seed out of the SPSL/Seamount sub-district tournament with Fife No. 2. and Franklin Pierce No. 3. Those three have first-round byes along with Sequim (Olympic No. 1).

Woodinville holds the No. 15 spot in this week's MaxPreps Xcellent 25 poll, which you can find here. Connell is at No. 18.

Over in the NFCA poll, Woodinville has inched up to No. 7 and Connell jumps in for the first time at No. 25.

Skyview's Carter Johnson tabbed Gatorade POY in boys soccer

Carter Johnson of Skyview High School in Vancouver is the 2012-13 Gatorade Washington Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Here is the press release:

CHICAGO (May 14, 2013) — In its 28^th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, today announced Carter Johnson of Skyview High School as its 2012-13 Gatorade Washington Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Johnson is the first Gatorade Washington Boys Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from Skyview High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Johnson as Washington’s best high school boys soccer player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced in May, Johnson joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Abby Wambach (1997-98, Our Lady of Mercy, N.Y.), Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo HS, Mich.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Alexi Lalas (1987-88, Cranbrook HS, Mich.), Heather O’Reilly (2001-02, East Brunswick HS, N.J.) and Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.).

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound junior forward has led the Storm to a 14-3-1 record entering the Class 4A state tournament, scheduled to begin May 15. The 2013 Greater St. Helens League MVP, Johnson scored 26 goals and passed for six assists in 18 games. In the 2012 state tournament, Johnson scored seven goals and added two assists in five games, including a pair of goals in Skyview’s 3-2 win over Central Kitsap High in the Class 4A championship game.

Johnson has maintained a 3.7 GPA in the classroom. A member of the Skyview High Science, Math and Technology Program, he has volunteered locally at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver in addition to donating his time as a peer tutor and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with his church youth group.

“Carter is a playmaker and a goal-scorer,” said Sam Busick, head coach of Hudson’s Bay High. “He scores goals when needed and creates them when needed. That is highly unusual in soccer. He has a huge impact on any game he plays in and his skill and technical ability on the ball and off the ball is impressive for a high school player.”

Johnson will begin his senior year of high school this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Johnson joins recent Gatorade Washington Boys Soccer Players of the Year Jordan Morris (2011-12, Mercer Island High School), Aaron Kovar (2010–11, Garfield High School), Nick Palodichuk (2009-10, Camas), Michael Harris (2008–09, Shorecrest High School), Brent Richards (2007-08, Camas), and Brandon Kelley (2006-07, Snohomish) among the state’s list of former award winners.

Come celebrate Doug Helgeson's birthday, love of life Saturday

If you're familiar with the history of Kentridge boys basketball, you should know the name Doug Helgeson.

And you'll have an opportunity to catch up with him at a 70th birthday party this Saturday (details to follow).

Helgeson coached the Chargers from 1970-85 and was also an assistant football coach at Kentridge. I always enjoyed covering his teams when I worked for the Valley Newspapers in the early 80s (I started at The Seattle Times in June of 1987).

Helgeson actually started his coaching career at Sequoia Junior High in Kent in 1967. After stepping away from coaching, he became an assistant principal at Kentridge until 1992, when he and his wife, Dinah, moved to Montana.

In 2001, the Helgesons moved to Bangkok, Thailand, to live and work at International School Bangkok. They retired in 2010 and moved to Vashon Island.

Last July, Doug was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma and, not surprisingly, is putting up quite a battle.

Saturday's party is a chance to celebrate of his love of ife, Dinah says. The open house is from 2-4 p.m. at the home of Ron and Connie Grimstad, 21842 148th Ave. SE, Kent. Grimstad is a former football coach at Kentridge.

I'll be covering West Central District softball that day, or I would jump at the chance to catch up with Doug and his family. I hope you can stop in for the celebration.

Emerald Ridge vs. Woodinville at Art Wright Field in Kent, 1 p.m. Emerald Ridge is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A. Woodinville is ranked ninth. It's a tough draw for the round-of-16, but it will make for a heck of a baseball game.

Kentridge vs. Richland at Richland High School, 1 p.m. Kentridge checks in the final poll at No. 7 while Richland is ranked fourth.

Best game:

There is a monster game mixed in the eight-game slate on May 18: How about No. 3 Glacier Peak vs. No. 1 Auburn Mountainview? It's a shame one team will have to lose this one, with Auburn Mountainview looking to win the school's first-ever state title in baseball. Glacier Peak is 18-6 this season while Auburn Mountainview is 22-3.

Class 2A:

Best game:

There aren't many local teams in the 2A field, but there is a looming giant: Archbishop Murphy. The Wildcats won the state title last year and enter with a legitimate chance to do so again this season. Archbishop Murphy is ranked No. 1 in 2A and is 21-2 this season. The Wildcats will open play against White River at Martin Stadium in Bellingham at 1 p.m.

Cedar Park Christian (Bothell) vs. Rochester at Volunteer Field in Anacortes, 1 p.m. Cedar Park Christian is 16-5 and ranked No. 6 in the state, so the Eagles are a real threat to make some noise in the 1A tournament.
