WHY DID THE SALMON CROSS THE ROAD?
Photo by Harley Soltes, Nov. 15

When flooding pushes water across the Skokomish Valley Road, stranded chum salmon, including this one, make a run for it in an attempt to get back into the Skokomish River north of Shelton in Mason County. On their detour upstream, the fish seem to wait for the wake of passing vehicles before dashing across the road from inundated fields.

FIELDS OF EMOTION

After the final out on a night the Mariners clinched the American League West championship by beating the Anaheim Angels, Mark McLemore waves an American flag on the pitcher's mound at Safeco Field while Manager Lou Piniella tips his cap. Moments later, the players knelt for a moment of silence to remember the victims of Sept. 11.
