A reporter with The Seattle Times since 2000, Hal Bernton has covered a wide range of regional and national stories. After Sept. 11, he traveled to France and North Africa to research the life of Ahmed Ressam, a young Algerian who was caught smuggling explosives through Washington. Bernton, 49, is married and has two teenage children.

Photographer Thomas James Hurst first picked up an old Nikormat at the age of 21 when he went to Bosnia in 1992. After returning to Bosnia the following year, he decided to study photojournalism at San Francisco State University. He has traveled extensively and his work has appeared in Time magazine, The New York Times and The Boston Globe. He joined The Seattle Times in 1999. He lives in Seattle with his wife.
