1981 Aug. 12: IBM introduces its personal computer with Microsoft's 16-bit operating system, MS-DOS 1.0.
1983 Sept. 29: Microsoft introduces Word for MS-DOS 1.0.
1985 Microsoft introduces Windows 1.0.
1987 Windows 2.0 launches.
1990 Windows 3.0 launches.
1993 Windows for Workgroups 3.11 launches. Microsoft introduces first Windows Server operating system, Windows NT Advanced Server 3.1.
1994 Windows NT Server 3.5 launches.
1995 Aug. 24: Windows 95 launches.
1996 Windows NT Server 4.0 launches.
1997 Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition launches.
1998 June 25: Windows 98 launches. Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition launches.
1999 Windows 98 Second Edition launches.
2000 Windows 2000 Professional launches.

Windows Millennium Edition launches.
Windows 2000 Server Family launches.
2001 Oct. 25: Windows XP launches.
2003 April: Windows Server 2003 scheduled to launch.

* Windows Longhorn expected to launch in 2004 or early 2005.
