Steve Ballmer's ascension

1975 Microsoft founded.
1977 Steve Ballmer graduates from Harvard.
1979 Jan. 1: Microsoft moves from Albuquerque, N.M., to Bellevue.
1980 Bill Gates hires Ballmer as Microsoft's first business manager.
1984 Ballmer becomes head of new Systems Software group.
1986 March 13: Microsoft stock goes public.
1990 July 15: Microsoft exceeds $1 billion in annual sales.
1992 Ballmer takes over worldwide sales and support.
1997 November: Regarding the Justice Department's filing of the antitrust case, Ballmer bellows: "To heck with Janet Reno."
1998 July: Gates appoints Ballmer president of Microsoft.
2000 Jan. 13: Gates becomes chairman and chief software architect. Ballmer adds CEO title, taking over management of the company.

June 22: Gates and Ballmer outline .NET strategy for Web services.
2001 Feb. 14: Ballmer names Rick Belluzzo president but takes back the responsibilities after Belluzzo resigns in April 2002.
2002 Feb. 8: In antitrust deposition, a well-mannered Ballmer defends company, criticizes additional remedies proposed by states.

June 6: Ballmer outlines new corporate values and mission statement emphasizing integrity.
