The Wandering Goose

Critic rating: Star rating

Take your pick from the well-endowed pastry case at this endearing café. The baked goods are superb but so is much of the comfort food on the menu: fried chicken, grits and grillades, grilled pimento cheese and the bodacious biscuit sandwiches are highly recommended. Some might find the occasionally ditsy service and the crowded, nearly communal tables annoying; for many it's part of the charm. Breakfast and lunch daily; family-style fixed-price supper every Friday, one seating at 7 p.m.
