U.S. men’s soccer win a hit on TV, too

The U.S. men’s victory over Panama was the second most-watched World Cup qualifier or international friendly game televised, and Seattle-Tacoma ranked second among national markets.

The U.S. men’s soccer team was a big winner on television as well as on the field.

The Americans’ 2-0 victory over Panama on Tuesday night in Seattle was ESPN’s second most-watched and second highest-rated World Cup qualifying or international friendly game telecast.

And Seattle-Tacoma’s 2.5 Nielsen rating was second only to San Diego (also a 2.5) among U.S. markets.

Baltimore, next at 2.1, was the only other market that drew a 2.0 or above.

ESPN said Wednesday that the game, which was played at CenturyLink Field, was seen by 1.4 million viewers nationally and 888,000 households based on a 0.8 household rating, according to Nielsen Media.

The game trailed only the U.S.-Mexico game March 26, a telecast that delivered 2.3 million viewers and 1.6 million households with a 1.4 household rating.
