Two lifts were disabled on Mount Bachelor near Bend, with damage to electrical systems.

BEND, Ore. — It appears that lightning struck at least twice in nearly the same place, disabling two lifts on the west side of the Mount Bachelor ski area.

Spokesman Andy Goggins says lightning strikes are what he calls “super rare” during the ski and snowboard season,

The Bend Bulletin reports the apparent strikes happened after the close of operations Monday. Goggins says the lifts’ electrical systems were disabled, but no other damage was observed.

One lift, Pine Marten, began operating on auxiliary power, and the ski area planned to restore primary power.

It was listed as open Thursday on the area’s website, which also reported a storm in progress. The other lift, Red, is often run as a backup to Pine Marten and was listed as closed.
