Fort Walla Walla Museum

Whitman Mission

National Historic Site

Marcus and Narcissa Whitman built the mission in 1836 seven miles west of Walla Walla. After more than a decade of interactions between settlers, missionaries and the Cayuse Indians, the venture ended in violence. Several Cayuse people killed the Whitmans and 11 others during a measles epidemic. Now a national historic site, ranger presentations and guest speakers provide educational and hands-on demonstrations about pioneer and Cayuse life from the 1840s. www.nps.gov/whmi or 509-529-2761.

Kirkman House

Within easy walking distance of downtown Walla Walla, the Kirkman House Museum, once a luxurious 1880s home, is one of the Northwest's notable Victorian structures. www.kirkmanhousemuseum.org or 509-529-4373.
