Leavenworth to get daily Amtrak train service

After years without regular service, Amtrak trains will stop daily at Leavenworth in Washington's Cascades starting Sept. 25

Soon you'll be able to skip the cross-Cascades drive and take an Amtrak train from Seattle to the popular Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth.

Train service to the mountain town will resume on Sept. 25 after years without a scheduled stop. The town's Icicle rail station has been completed, meaning the cross-county Empire Builder train, which passes through the area, can stop at Leavenworth.

"Our community has a long history with railroads and train service and we are truly thrilled to welcome Amtrak to Leavenworth, " said Rob Eaton, Leavenworth's mayor.

Leavenworth has popular festivals, especially around Christmas, and is both a summer and winter recreation destination.

Service to Leavenworth will begin on Friday, Sept. 25, with the westbound Empire Builder train departing Seattle's King Street Station at 4:45 p.m. and arriving in Leavenworth at about 8 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 26, both eastbound and westbound Empire Builder trains will begin daily stops. The Empire Builder variously departs from Seattle and Portland for Chicago.
