Exploring Southeast Washington

Walla Walla is the prime visitor destination in Southeast Washington with its wineries, museums and a good selection of hotels/restaurants.

Q. Any great ideas for Southeast Washington? We just moved to the area and are looking for trips to take with our 14-month-old.

A. Walla Walla is the prime visitor destination in Southeast Washington with its wineries, museums and a good selection of hotels/restaurants. A short trip that's definitely worth making is to Palouse Falls State Park. It feels like it's out in the middle of nowhere, in empty countryside down a dirt road, but there's a pleasant tree-shaded picnic area near the park's centerpiece — a waterfall that plunges dramatically more than 100 feet into a rocky pool. Just hold tight to your toddler if you walk the short bluff-top trail for a closer view of the falls; there's a precipitous drop-off.

I love driving through the rolling hills and wheat fields of the Palouse, and pausing in small towns such as Pomeroy. I skirted the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge on backroads and found a bevy of birds in late spring. The refuge is south of Potholes State Park, a very popular boating/camping destination and a good place to cool off in these last days of summer.
