People staying home and off the roads
Posted by Keith Ervin
Commuters stayed home in droves Tuesday morning, as they followed emergency officials' advice to stay home if possible.
"It's a very light traffic day, as if it were a holiday," said Suzanne Hartman, a spokeswoman for Seattle's Emergency Operations Center.
"It's definitely lighter than normal -- which is good. Drivers are heeding our advice," said state DOT spokeswoman Meghan Pembroke.
DOT's real-time traffic maps showed a rare sight for the normal morning rush hours: green-colored, or "wide-open" freeways throughout almost the entire Seattle area. On Monday night, the maps were largely black as traffic ground to an excrutiating, hours-long halt.
The green colors Tuesday weren't necessarily accurate in all places, Pembroke said, because cars traveling outside the normal lane don't trip sensors that count vehicles. But traffic cameras confirmed that traffic was very light on most highways.
