Alaskan Way Viaduct reopens; other streets still closed
Posted by Mike Lindblom
The Alaskan Way Viaduct has reopened northbound; southbound it is open as far as 1st Ave. The Seattle Department of Transportation is working to reopen portions south of 1st Ave. within the next two hours. Other key thoroughfares remained closed, including:
o West Dravus Street between 20th and 27th Avenues
o Battery St. Tunnel
o NE 5100 block of Latona Ave. N
o Denny Way between Melrose and Stewart Sts.
Meanwhile, detours have been horrendous for some travelers. Mark Matassa, a spokesman for Mayor Mike McGinn, was stuck on a #22 Metro bus that was diverted away from the low-level West Seattle Bridge, where congestion and at least one sliding vehicle blocked the path. Other bus communters reported trips lasting more than three hours on routes that normally took less than 60 minutes.
Capitol Hill Blog was telling its readers note to cross arterial streets on steep hills because the risks were so high.
