Theme Song: Pondering the right music for ... Felix Hernandez
Posted by Jerry Brewer
Be sure to listen to us talk about King Felix's Theme Song on 950 KJR-AM during the 4 p.m. hour today.
Mariners ace Felix Hernandez has ascended to Best Athlete In Seattle status. He is the finest pitcher the American League, and perhaps in all of baseball, and he dominates with a style that makes you stop what you're doing to watch him get three outs every inning he pitches. For months, he has been the only reason to look forward to a Mariners game. Cy Young or not, he's the man. And he's only 24 years old.
And he is today's Theme Song subject.
A SONG HERNANDEZ MIGHT CHOOSE
"Young Forever" by Jay-Z featuring Mr. Hudson
This rap song reflects where Felix is in his life. He's young, loves being young and wants to stay this way for as long as he can. He often deflects media questions about whether he's frustrated the Mariners don't score enough runs for him, or whether he's mad he didn't make the All-Star team, by saying, "I'm only 24."
There's nothing like being so young and so good. He can live in a carefree manner because he has the savvy of veteran (six major-league seasons already) mixed with the exuberance of a rookie and the health of boxer who never gets hit. His life is a dream, even when the Mariners don't support him with offense. Anything that's bad in his baseball life can be soothed by the fact that he doesn't have to worry about grown-up stuff for another five years or so.
Yes, right now, it seems like he will be young forever.
MY RUNNER-UP FOR HERNANDEZ
"It's Good To Be King" by Tom Petty
This was the first song that came to my mind when thinking about King Felix. It's a little too slow for the 24-year-old, but it works.
Tom Petty is quite whimsical in this song. He's a guy who needs to escape to this royal state. But Felix doesn't have to imagine. He really does have his own kingdom.
MY CHOICE FOR FELIX HERNANDEZ'S THEME SONG
"How Ya Like Me Now" by Kool Moe Dee
King Felix was 1 when this song debuted in 1987. But this should be his theme music. It's clear to me from the opening lyrics.
I throw my tape on
And I watch ya
Three seconds later
I got ya
Shakin' your head
Dancin' instead of sittin'
On the days he pitches, it does only take three seconds for him to get you engaged. Sometimes, it seems like he gets through innings that quickly. I like this Kool Moe Dee jam -- the most popular song of his career -- because it brags with good cause. The feel of it is like, "Whatever you thought of me yesterday, look at me today. I'm exceeding your expectations. How ya like me now?"
Yep, that's Felix. When he was younger, you might have questioned his conditioning, his mental focus, his desire, but right now, you can't knock him in any way. He has matured without getting old.
How ya like him now? He's the best of his kind.
OK, now you have the floor. What would you choose as King Felix's theme song?
