On Sunday, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck begins his 10th season with the Seahawks. All in all, it has been an extraordinary decade for the player Mike Holmgren handpicked to help rebuild this franchise.

Hasselbeck has led the Seahawks to the playoffs five times, exactly half of their all-time postseason appearances. He is the only Seahawks quarterback to make it to the Super Bowl. He is a three-time Pro Bowler.

But he turns 35 later this month and is in the last year of his contract, so he's nearing the end of his Seattle tenure. He might even be at the end. Who knows what the future holds for him after this season?

Hasselbeck's past two seasons have been plagued by injury and the team's 9-23 record, but those down years shouldn't obstruct what he has accomplished. He is, simply, the best QB the franchise has ever known.

So, as Hasselbeck prepares for the end or attempts to extend his Seahawks career, let's think of a theme song for him.

I think this U2 song matches Hasselbeck's mentality as he tries to finish his career in grand fashion. A former sixth round draft pick, Hasselbeck has reached incredible highs, but he really wants to get back to being a Super Bowl contender.

When the 2005 Seahawks made the Super Bowl, everyone thought the window was open for them to win a championship. It wound up closing sooner than expected. They returned to the playoffs in 2006 and 2007, only with lesser teams, and they haven't been back since then. Hasselbeck has nearly gotten the most out of his talent, except for one thing. He hasn't won a championship. And the Seahawks are miles away from that level right now.

Hasselbeck wants to get back to being, at least, a perennial contender. He's still looking for the proper capstone to his career.

OK, this one is a little goofy, but I couldn't help it. The Seahawks are rebuilding, and the offensive line remains a huge question mark. On Sunday, the Seahawks' starting left tackle will be either a converted guard who's coming off microfracture knee surgery ( Chester Pitts) or a dude that coach Pete Carroll kept calling "Troy" earlier this week ( Tyler Polumbus). It really is "Mission Impossible" for Hasselbeck to lead this team back to the playoffs.

My pick is quite melancholy. Hasselbeck is really quick-witted, and I wanted to have funnier theme music for him, but that doesn't really match where he is in his career right now. So, bear with me.

In the transient NFL, it's a given that all franchise quarterbacks are going to wind up seemingly walking alone at the end of their careers. Hasselbeck has been here for 10 years, and the team around him has basically turned over three times. Only the franchise QB is safe in this league, and that's assuming he doesn't start to slip.

So, at the end, it can become a rather lonely walk. I think Hasselbeck is still happy in Seattle and still happy playing with the Seahawks. But there must be a part of him that looks around the locker room -- one that used to feature Walter Jones, Steve Hutchinson, Robbie Tobeck, Bobby Engram, Darrell Jackson, Shaun Alexander and Mack Strong -- and thinks how strange it is to be one of the last men standing. Because the Seahawks have been losing, he must also wonder during private moments whether the good times have passed.

This week, he lost another close friend when the team waived defensive tackle Craig Terrill. That's life in the NFL, a young man's league.

The QB position can be the loneliest in the NFL anyway. Quarterbacks are the guys stashed away in the film room all week, searching for an edge. They're the guys standing alone in press conferences, serving as team spokesmen. They're the guys who need to stay relaxed while the rest of the team gets riled.

But, as Hasselbeck knows, it's a rewarding experience, even if he does wind up outliving the glory. Right now, he is walking a boulevard of broken dreams. He wants to get back to leading the good Seahawks teams he enjoyed before this rebuilding period. Maybe the dream can be fixed. This season may just decide that.
