Man dies after Sunday house fire in Federal Way

A 61-year-old man died after a fire erupted in a home Sunday in Federal Way, according to Kendra A. Kay, public information officer for South King Fire & Rescue.
Firefighters responded to a blaze at 20 Avenue South and South 280th Street after receiving a report of smoke coming from a house. A small fire in the kitchen was located and quickly extinguished. As firefighters were searching the home, they found an unconscious 61-year-old man in a back bedroom.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Kay said. Neighbors said the victim lived alone.
Firefighters said the home did not have any working smoke alarms.
The King County Medical Examiner's Office will determine how the victim died. His name was not immediately released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it started in the kitchen. Smoke and fire damage is estimated at $100,000, Kay said.
