Woman hit by train and killed early Sunday in Seattle

A woman walking along the railroad tracks shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday was hit by a Link light rail train and later died, according to Seattle Police.

The woman had been walking on the tracks near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and Renton Avenue South. The train operator sounded the train's warning horn repeatedly and applied the brakes, police reported, but the woman "did not make any effort to move off of the tracks."

The Seattle Fire Department also responded and transported the woman to Harborview Medical Center where she later died from her injuries, according to the police.

Passengers on the train were taken by bus to the Rainier Beach and Tukwila stations. The train was the last southbound train of the night, according to Sound Transit.

Additional information on the victim was not available. Police are continuing to investigate.
