Distracted driver who killed elderly pedestrian sentenced
Posted by Jennifer Sullivan
A Seattle man who fatally struck a blind 91-year-old man near Northgate Mall last summer while he was looking at his cellphone GPS and driving was sentenced Friday to 10 months of work release.
Scott Caudel previously pleaded guilty to reckless driving and reckless endangerment, according to King County prosecutors.
Grant Meyers was using a white cane while crossing near the intersection of 5th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 97th Street on June 10, 2009.
Meyers was near a crosswalk when he was struck by Caudel's pickup, court papers said. The elderly man died two days after the crash.
During Friday's sentencing, Superior Court Judge Ronald Kessler forbade Caudel from using a cellphone, even a hands-free device, while driving during the next two years.
