Kent police: Chase ends with arrest of 'prolific' car thief

Kent police say they arrested a "prolific" car thief early Thursday morning following a 15-mile chase through South King County.
Kent officers were alerted around midnight that the suspect, described by a Kent police news release as "a well known 34-year-old local transient and auto thief," was driving a stolen pickup in the city's West Hill neighborhood. A short time later the suspect was spotted by police as he drove the pickup on Military Road South.
Police followed the pickup as it headed north on Interstate 5, then north on I-405. Police tried to stop the truck in Renton, but that was unsuccessful, police said.
During the ensuing chase police tried placing spike strips on the roadway and attempted PIT maneuvers. Police said the suspect responded by swerving the pickup toward officers' vehicles.
The chase ended when the suspect lost control of the pickup and struck a concrete barrier in Tukwila. Police arrested the driver.
"This arrest highlights the success of the ongoing partnership between local police, the Auto Theft Prevention Authority and our prosecutors" Kent Police Chief Steve Strachan said in a news release.
The suspect -- identified by Kent police as Casey L. Cox, 34 -- is currently in the Kent Municipal Jail.
