Everett cop now facing two charges for fatal shooting
Posted by John de Leon
Everett police officer Troy Meade is now facing a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting last year of an unarmed man outside an Everett restaurant. Meade had earlier been charged with first-degree manslaughter in Snohomish County Superior Court.
Meade fatally shot Niles Meservey as he sat in his car outside the Chuckwagon Inn, in the 6700 block of Evergreen Way, around 11:40 p.m. on June 10.
Officers were called to the restaurant after witnesses reported seeing an apparently drunk Meservey, 51, trying to leave in his car. Police used their patrol cars to box in Meservey's Corvette and shot him with a Taser.
When Meservey's car lurched forward, Meade fatally shot him with a handgun seven times. Meservey was shot seven times in the back, shoulder and wrist, court charging papers said. Detectives found eight bullet casings near the Corvette, charging papers said.
An autopsy later determined Meservey had a blood-alcohol level of 0.26, more than three times the state's legal limit of 0.08. He was not armed, lawyers for his family said.
Meservey's family has filed a wrongful-death suit against the city.
We will post a full story shortly.
