LOS ANGELES — HBO says it’s acquired the rights to the play “All the Way,” and Bryan Cranston will reprise his role as President Lyndon Johnson in a TV adaptation of his recent Broadway debut.

The Tony Award-winning play, by Seattle writer Robert Schenkkan, opened earlier this year to critical and popular success while also winning Cranston the Tony as best actor. Schenkkan will write the HBO adaptation.

“All the Way” focuses on Johnson early in his presidency after the death of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. HBO hasn’t specified an air date.

The play is being staged July 25-Nov. 3 at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, and can be seen with its sequel, “The Great Society,” at Seattle Repertory Theatre later this year.
