With a nod to the anniversary of D-Day, a very short list of WWII-inspired books and movies we love.

The recent 70th anniversary of D-Day (June 6) brings great World War II books and movies to mind. There are dozens — too many to publish. So here are just a few favorites.

Books

‘Agent Zigzag’

Ben Macintyre’s spellbinding, suspenseful and simply amazing tale is the true story of Eddie Chapman, a British criminal and con man who was captured by the Germans, trained as a spy, then became a valued double agent for the British when the Germans parachuted him back into Britain.

Movies

‘The Best Years of Our Lives’

Starring Myrna Loy, Fredric March and real-life veteran Harold Russell, this moving 1946 drama about three World War II soldiers returning home won seven Academy Awards.

Books

‘Catch 22’

Joseph Heller’s satirical novel, published in 1961, is the last word on the insanity of war.

Movies

‘Inglourious Basterds’

Brad Pitt’s accent, Cristoph Waltz’s villainy and a whole lot of revenge fantasy percolate into a cup of something fun to watch — and thought provoking.

Seattle Times staffers Mary Ann Gwinn, Moira Macdonald and Brian Gallagher contributed to this list
