Byrd Ensemble offers timeless ‘Mystic Minimalism’
Byrd Ensemble offers timeless “Mystic Minimalism” with a program of meditative choral works by Henryk Górecki, Arvo Pärt and John Tavener, Feb. 9, 2013.
‘Mystic Minimalism: Górecki, Pärt, Tavener’
Anyone wanting to take a break from the 21st century will have a chance on Saturday, when the Byrd Ensemble presents “Mystic Minimalism: Górecki, Pärt, Tavener,” featuring eight choral works by Henryk Górecki, Arvo Pärt and John Tavener composed mostly in the 1980s and ’90s. The program may be of relatively recent vintage, but its aim is to immerse listeners in a meditative sound world that stands outside of time. Pärt’s “I Am the True Vine” is an especially magical work, distinctive for the way its twining rise-and-fall of voices reflects the content of its Biblical text. 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Trinity Parish Church, 609 Eighth Ave., Seattle; $10-$20 (206-397-3627 or www.byrdensemble.com).
