Seattle Opera’s 2013-14 season: light, dark and fantastical
Seattle Opera’s next season, its last under the helm of Speight Jenkins, will include fare that ranges from comic to tragic to fantastical.

The numbers are all lined up for Seattle Opera’s 2013-14 season.
This year marks the opera’s 50th anniversary, as well as its 10th year at McCaw Hall. This year is also the bicentennial of Verdi and Wagner, whose work will be heard in the new season. Speight Jenkins celebrates his 30th year as the Opera’s general director, before retiring in 2014. A new general director will be named later this year.
In the meantime, for his final bow, Jenkins is serving up what he calls a lineup of “great voices, extraordinary music, compelling drama, and captivating productions — everything that I have always loved about opera.”
August brings the return of Wagner’s “Ring” cycle (Aug. 4-25). Then the season proper begins.
Here’s what’s coming:
“The Daughter of the Regiment”(Oct. 19-Nov. 2, 2013): Donizetti’s 1840 comic opera, about an orphaned girl raised by a regiment of French soldiers, pairs soprano Sarah Coburn with tenor Lawrence Brownlee. The two were last seen on the McCaw Hall stage in the opera’s 2011 production of “The Barber of Seville.” The production, directed by Emilio Sagi (making his Seattle Opera debut), was designed for Italy’s Teatro Comunale di Bologna and sets the action in the 1940s.
“Rigoletto”(Jan. 11-25, 2014): Verdi’s 1851 revenge tragedy about a court jester who can’t protect his daughter is back for its seventh Seattle Opera production — transposed, this time, to a 1930s Italian setting. Baritone Marco Vratogna, soprano Davinia Rodríguez and tenor Francesco Demuro star in it. Linda Brovsky, who led the Opera’s debut production of “Don Quichotte” in 2011, directs.
“The Consul”(Feb. 22-March 7, 2014): Gian Carlo Menotti’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1950 opera, about a woman trying to secure a visa to flee a totalitarian regime, gets its first Seattle Opera outing in a production designed by Arizona Opera. Soprano Marcy Stonikas (last seen here in “Turandot” and “Fidelio”) is joined by baritone Michael Todd Simpson and mezzo-soprano Lucille Beer. Peter Kazaras, who helms Seattle Opera’s Young Artist Program, directs.
“The Tales of Hoffman” (May 3-17, 2014): Director Chris Alexander brings back his 2005 Seattle Opera’s Artist of the Year Award-winning production of Offenbach’s popular 1881 opera to the McCaw Hall stage. Tenor William Burden, soprano Norah Amsellem and mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey star in this fantastical drama about a storyteller (Burden) recalling his three great loves (all played by Amsellem).
In the pit, conductor Yves Abel opens and closes the season with “The Daughter of the Regiment” and “The Tales of Hoffman.” Riccardo Frizza conducts “Rigoletto”; Carlo Montanaro conducts “The Consul.”
The season concludes with the International Wagner Competition (Aug. 7, 2014) and a 50th Anniversary Concert and Speight Celebration on Aug. 9, 2014.
