Gaylen Hansen

After interviewing Washington artist Gaylen Hansen, a writer declared that Hansen "sees things the way they are, then paints them the way he wants." In other words, if you're looking for something in the way of formal and figurative for the parlor, you won't find it in this exhibition of new Hansen works at Linda Hodges Gallery. You will find a lot more fun: vibrant colors applied with powerful brushwork; chunky and cheerful dogs and birds; and a few lonesome cowboys — the trademarks of the Palouse painter. Opens Thursday (reception 6-8 p.m.) and runs through July 28. Linda Hodges Gallery, 316 First Ave. S., Seattle; (206-624-3034 or www.lindahodgesgallery.com).
