The Short List

Critics' Nits: 'Mad Men,' The Moondoggies and Brooke Burke

This week, in honor of April Fools' Day, our usual list of things we love becomes things we love to hate. On that list: The Moondoggies, Brooke Burke from "Dancing with the Stars" and "Mad Men."

Granted, I haven't watched the show much since the first three episodes sent me screaming from the living room, but I'm pretty sure of this: I could never stomach the shallow characters behaving badly — and looking pouty about it — week after week. Or the plot (whatever it is). Or the melodrama. Or January Jones. It's enough to make you drink in the middle of the day.

"Hate" is too strong a word, but what is the deal with Seattle's love affair with this band (whose admirers, I confess, also include pundits at my own newspaper)? These are not songs. They are random chants that might one day be turned into songs by someone who knows how to actually write a melody. Any wonder no one outside King County cares?

Quite possibly the "Dancing with the Stars" hostess/ spokesmodel is, off-screen, a perfectly lovely person and a joy to all who know her. But on-screen, her vapid chirping ("Good luck, everyone!" — the "DWTS" equivalent of "May the odds be ever in your favor"), clueless interviewing and Barbie-gone-mad wardrobe make me want to throw a stiletto at the TV. Somewhere, Samantha Harris is snickering.
