UW Chamber Dance dusts off 3 modern gems
Seattle's UW Chamber Dance Company revives works by Bebe Miller, Shapiro & Smith and Seattle choreographer Wade Madsen
UW's Chamber Dance Company
Seattle dance fans familiar with the University of Washington dance program's Chamber Dance Company are in on a secret that should be less well-kept. Under artistic director Hannah C. Wiley, the troupe deftly reconstructs and revitalizes modern-dance treasures that might otherwise be lost.
This year's showcase includes a playfully swoon-y suite of duets by Seattle choreographer Wade Madsen ("Embrace" from 1983) and an impressively gymnastic item for six dancers and three wooden benches by Minneapolis' Shapiro & Smith ("To Have and To Hold" from 1989, pictured above with Wilson Mendieta). Part-time local Bebe Miller's "Cantos Gordos" (1994) rounds out the program.
7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, Meany Hall, University of Washington, Seattle; $10-$20 (206-543-4880 or www.artsuw.org).
