Chinese dance traditions take stage in 'Rhythm of Dance'

The silks will billow, float and swirl in tight synchrony at "Rhythm of Dance — 2010," a showcase of Chinese classical and folk dance and ballet at Bagley Wright Theatre on Saturday. The program is presented by Hengda Dance Academy and the American Asian Performing Arts Theater, and features the choreography of Hengda Li, who blends "strong traditional style with a modern interpretation."

Highlights include "Last Trace of the Setting Sun," a duet performed by Pacific Northwest Ballet principal dancer Mara Vinson and former PNB principal Le Yin. Also on the program: "Terra Cotta Warriors," about the buried relics found in Xi'an, China; "Rhythm of Calligraphy," drawing its inspiration from Chinese calligraphy; "Song of the Ocean," described as "an ode to the powers of waves"; and "The Butterfly Lovers," a love story featuring two performers from the Hong Kong Dance Company.
