Fit & Fun

This Friday — as well as every first Friday of the month — Stone Gardens in Seattle will conduct an introduction to climbing class for women. (Its Bellevue facility holds its women-only class on the third Friday of each month).

The climbing gyms have been offering the classes for more than a year after realizing some women were feeling a bit intimidated by the male-dominated climbing-gym environment.

“We wanted a more female-friendly way to show women that while climbing does require (and build) strength, that you only need to be strong enough for your own body,” says Beth Oldroyd of Stone Gardens.

The sessions, from 7 to 9 p.m., require no previous climbing know-how, but experienced climbers also are welcomed. Participants must fill out a liability waiver and pay a $20 special rate, which includes all the gear they will need.
