Nate Silver picks Seahawks to make it to Super Bowl
Political wunderkind Nate Silver has jumped on the Seahawks bandwagon, and it’s getting a little crowded.
Silver, the statistical guru who made a name for himself predicting election results for The New York Times, says the Seahawks will advance to the Super Bowl. And that’s not all. He even says Seattle should be favored to win it all in New Orleans.
Silver’s not alone in liking the Seahawks, the NFL’s hottest team. A look through some of the early predictions for this weekend shows most of the so-called experts pick the Seahawks to continue their magic-carpet ride through the playoffs by winning in Atlanta on Sunday.
Of 24 predictions I found on the game Thursday, the Seahawks were chosen over the Falcons, 15-8.
CBS Sports picks the Seahawks, 7-2. Yahoo! Sports chose Seattle, 3-2. Peter King of Sports Illustrated went with Seattle, as did writers from SB Nation and Bleacher Report. The Associated Press, The Miami Herald and The Pigskin Report picked Atlanta. ESPN's NFL analysts were split, with Tedi Brusci picking Atlanta and Herm Edwards going with Seattle.
The Seahawks, the NFC's No. 5 seed, are 21/2-point underdogs on the road at Atlanta, the conference's No. 1 seed.
Silver predicted the Seahawks will keep winning and face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, Feb. 3.
Silver, who runs The New York Times’ FiveThirtyEight blog, appeared Thursday on ESPN’s First Take.
Silver, 34, became famous for crunching numbers to pick all 50 states correctly in the 2012 Presidential election. He said stats give the Seahawks the edge, too.
“Seattle had the best balance throughout the year,” Silver said. “So they had the best stats from the regular season. Again, you can worry about, will teams adjust to them. Will Russell Wilson be a guy that won’t surprise people as much in the playoffs now? But, I think, if you have to pick one team in the NFC, I’m still comfortable with the Seahawks.”
A Seahawks-Patriots Super Bowl would be a rematch of the Week 6 game in Seattle won by the Seahawks, 24-23.
Look for the Seattle Times and Atlanta Journal-Constitution predictions this weekend online and in Sunday’s print edition.
