Sorry, Seahawks, but Seattle has always been a Husky town

Seattle Times reader Mike Herman responded to this week's Take 2 post asking fans what team or sport best defines Seattle. He takes issue with our final unscientific vote, which drew more than 8,500 votes and was won by the Seahawks/NFL with 39 percent of the vote. Herman argued that Seattle is a Husky town. Herman lives in Walla Walla, but grew up in Bellevue watching the Mariners, Seahawks and Sonics.

At its heart, Seattle is a Husky town that has fair-weather flings with other sports.

The original Take 2 piece posted with the poll ran through the Sounders' recent attendance coups, the Mariners' Refuse to Lose, and the history of the Seahawks' 12th man. Seattle has certainly shown these teams support,
particularly when they are having success.

But let's be honest, when any of these teams has down years, there has not nearly been as much excitement.
Attendance for the M's has been declining steadily. My family had season tickets to the Seahawks in the early 1990s, an era when the Kingdome got loud, but nothing like the CLink.

That being said, I think depth of fandom can be judged by the level of irrationality possessed by the fan base. Think Yankees fans who expect a championship every year. Or Cowboys fans who can't/won't recognize they are no longer the dominant team of the '90s.

With this in mind I think it's pretty easy to declare that Husky football fans are without a doubt the biggest "fans" in the city. Husky football has been stagnant for years but that does not stop fans from debating before the season about which week the team will clinch a Rose Bowl berth or shaking their heads in disbelief when a big recruit signs with Oregon or USC.

Bottom line: Seattle accepts mediocrity from everyone but UW football, and that makes us a Husky town at heart.
