Take 2 — London Calling
Seattle Times readers who are traveling to London for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games are taking over our Take 2 blog to share their Olympic experiences from the United Kingdom.
Nothing but sunshine and warm feelings at the Serpentine
The weather prediction was for a sunny day with a high of 80 degrees, so I decided that we should head to Hyde Park to check out the men's 10k marathon swimming in the Serpentine. The Tube from our station in South London to the busy stop at Green Park was totally manageable, and it was fun to see all the people with flags wrapped around themselves. One industrious fellow had made his Union Jack into a lovely skirt (thankfully, he had shorts on underneath). We walked through Green Park to Hyde Park, which is always a nice stroll, and it was filled with folks from all over the world enjoying the buzz of these amazingly successful Games.
There were people lining all sides of the Serpentine, but they were friendly and chatty, and we soon found a good spot to stand and cheer on the swimmers. We had a break for a picnic, and those guys were still swimming. The winner came in well under two hours, but that is still a lot of swimming. I loved hearing the spectators cheer for all of the athletes, regardless of what country they were representing. People are just cheering for these amazing Games and for the inspiring people participating in them. There is a warm and fuzzy feel to London these days, and everyone has caught the buzz
