Baby steps all the way to the Olympic Games

With the 2012 Summer Olympics Games just one day away, more London Calling contributors are en route to London.

Suna Gurol and Jim Jeffreys — who attended four days of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver with their then eight-year-old son Kai and wrote about their experience on the Seattle Times Olympic Outsiders blog — are heading to London for two weeks where they will attend eight Olympic events.

In the two-and-a-half years since the Vancouver Games, however, the family has experienced some big changes — changes that will make their London experience particularly unique.

"We now have a baby girl, who at 11-months keeps her 11-year-old brother and her rapidly aging parents very busy," writes Gurol and Jeffreys in an email.

The couple says they will share with readers the challenges of traveling "around London during the Olympics with a baby, how she responds to getting taken to all these events and how everyone responds to her."

"Will we get kicked out of Centre Court at Wimbledon if she decides to shriek good and loud during set point?" says Gurol and Jeffreys.

Gurol and Jeffreys will also share their insights on the "arena food scene in London" and Olympics fans.

"Last time around we were amazed at the devotion of the orange-clad Dutch fans and the ritual chanting of the Swiss. American fans are pretty dull by comparison. We look forward to seeing what kind of fan support the Turkish women's basketball team has, for example," writes Gurol and Jeffreys.

Another London Calling contributor, Sherry Schriver, is also making her way to London after a year of planning and organizing.

"I'll check into a dorm on Thursday night, get my bearings on Friday, then on Saturday women's basketball begins. The women will be playing every other day until August 12 and I have tickets for all of them!" says Schriver in an email.

"I also have a long list of things to do on the 'off' days, so those off day outings and my unconventional home away from home may be the source of a lot of my posts."

Check the Seattle Times London Calling blog often for updates from Schriver, Gurol and Jeffreys, and other London-bound Seattleites.
