Update: Big pet-food recall
Natural Pet Products has recalled four of its most popular brands of dog food -- EVO, Innova, California Natural and HealthWise -- because of possible salmonella contamination.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recalled food was made in a single production facility during a two week window in December 2012. The Michigan Department of Agriculture found salmonella in routine testing, and as a precautionary measure, Natura voluntarily recalled all products made during that time.
The food was sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet-specialty retailers, and online in the United States, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Costa Rica, according to the FDA.
Product expiration dates ranged from Dec. 12, 2013 to Jan. 1, 2014. Natura distributed the food between Dec. 18 and March 15. No other dry food, canned food, biscuits, bars or treats were affected, the FDA said.
Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products, and humans are at risk for salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products.
