Dogs need new homes as construction gets under way
Kitsap Humane Society is getting some much needed repairs and new kennels but to make the improvements it needs to quickly find homes for dogs.
To help move as many pooches into new homes before construction starts, the shelter is offering 50 percent off adoption fees for medium and large dogs in the Main Kennel through March 10.
On March 11, any remaining dogs will be moved to a nearby commercial boarding facility for up to 10 days so repair work can be done on the walls in the Main Kennel which were damaged by water seepage.
In addition to the water damage repairs in the Main Kennel area, 12 new kennels will be built for a total of 72 kennels.
Three distinct areas for housing dogs will be available when all the work is done. There will be a new Small Dog Kennel, an improved Main Kennel for larger dogs and the existing Puppy Room.
The new kennels, which are expected to be completed in April, will reduce overcrowding (small dogs had often been housed in hallways) and improve living conditions for small dogs by housing them in kennels instead of temporary crates.
The construction and repairs are expected to cost about $90,000. About half of that amount is coming from individual gifts, kennel sponsorships and a $25,000 challenge grant by an anonymous donor. A fundraising campaign is under way to raise the remaining money.

Owners looking for missing pets should still go to the shelter on Dickey Road during the construction period. Other regular services at Kitsap Humane Society, including spay/neuter and microchip ID clinics, adoptions and foster care, will continue.
