Cool City Pets and other animal events

Sometimes great joy comes in a small package.

On Saturday, the Seattle Animal Shelter will be showcasing small pets that could bring joy to the right homes and families. It's one of several pet events this month.

Cool City Pets: 1-3 p.m. Dec. 15, Seattle Animal Shelter, 2061 15th Ave. W., Seattle. Meet the many small animals including hamsters, rabbits, birds, ferrets, guinea pigs, rats and reptiles available for adoption. Volunteers will be on site to share information about each animal's characteristics, needs and basic care. Adoption fees: $5-$25. Santa Claws: 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 15-16, Woodinville PetSmart, 17845 Garden Way N.E., Woodinville. Pets can pose with Santa for a photo package ($9.95). $5 will be donated to the Seattle Humane Society.

Canine Christmas Extravaganza Adoption event: Noon-3 p.m. Dec. 16, Paws-Abilities Total Dog Center, 7338 26th Street E, Building F, Fife. More than a dozen shelter and rescue groups will have adoptable pets at this event. For a list of the groups, see the website. Booths with food and pet supplies will open at 10 a.m. The adoption event starts at noon. Adoption fees: $100-$350. Santa will be stopping by for photos with pets.

Volunteer Orientation: 4:30-6:30 p.m. Dec. 19, Regional Animal Services of King County, 21615 64th Ave. S., Kent. Orientation for volunteers will be at the pet adoption center. For information on volunteering and to RSVP, email sarah.luthens@kingcounty.gov.

Candy Cane Cats: For December, Purrfect Pals is reducing adoption fees on all cats with stripes. Click on the Purrfect Pals website for a list of adoption centers and details. The website also includes a link to The Animal Rescue Site's Shelter Challenge. As of Friday night, Purrfect Pals was in the top 10 in the competition for grant money. Voting ends at midnight Sunday.

Home for the Holidays: Through Dec. 30, PAWS, 15305 44th Ave. W., Lynnwood, and PAWS Cat City, 5200 Roosevelt Way N.E., Suite B, Seattle. Give a dog or cat the gift of a loving home. Adoption fees are reduced to $75 for adult pets and $50 for senior pets.
