2A softball: Lake Washington advances to state semifinals

Lake Washington beats Port Angeles and Deer Park to reach the Class 2A state semifinals.

SELAH – Hanna Walker collected four hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs as Lake Washington won twice to advance to the semifinals of the Class 2A state softball tournament at Carlon Park in Selah.

The Kangaroos overcame an early 2-0 deficit to beat Port Angeles 6-2 in their opener, and followed that with a 3-0 quarterfinal victory against Deer Park.

Kim Veldee gave up four hits in six innings of work in the quarterfinal, and helped her cause at the plate with a pair of singles.

Lake Washington returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday against Lynden, which shut out Ellensburg and Capital in its two games.

The two victories earned the Kangaroos their first state softball trophy since finishing fourth in the 1982 AAA slowpitch tournament.

Fife beat Tumwater, 7-6, in a first-round game before losing to Othello, 5-1, in a quarterfinal. Fife recovered to beat Sequim, 10-1, and will face Port Angeles in a loser-out game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

White River and Orting were eliminated on Friday after losing two games. White River fell to W.F. West, 5-3, and Anacortes, 9-8. Orting lost to Deer Park, 4-0, and Port Angeles, 9-2.

Seattle Christian knocked out in 1A

Seattle Christian opened play in the 1A softball state tournament in Selah with a 10-8 win over Medical Lake, but then lost its next two games on Friday.

A 14-0 loss to Elma put Seattle Christian in a loser-out game against Okanogan, which won, 5-4.
