Apple Cup history: Bowl-bound teams
Today: Apple Cup games in years both teams went to bowl games.
This week we’ll share stories from a few of the oddest Apple Cups — the 1963 game, which was postponed a week after JFK’s assassination; the 2008 contest that matched Paul Wulff’s first Washington State team, which came into the game with one victory, and the winless Huskies; and last year’s comeback victory by the Cougars.
Each day, we’ll take a look at the series.
Washington and Washington State are each bowl-eligible this season. There have been only five Apple Cups played in years that both teams went to bowl games.
2002: Washington 29, at Washington State 26 (3OT). The Cougars were 9-1 and ranked No. 3 before the game. WSU beat UCLA the next week and advanced to the Rose Bowl, where it lost 34-14 to Oklahoma. The Huskies lost to Purdue 34-24 in the Sun Bowl.
2001: At Washington 26, Washington State 14. The Cougars were ranked No. 9 nationally and the Huskies 16th. The Huskies were demolished 65-7 the next week at Miami, then lost to Texas 47-43 in the Holiday Bowl. The Cougars beat Purdue 33-27 in the Sun Bowl.
1997: Washington State 41, at Washington 35. The 11th-ranked Cougars beat No. 16 Washington, advancing to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 82 years. The Cougars came up short there, losing to Michigan 21-16. The Huskies beat Michigan State 51-23 in the Aloha Bowl.
1992: At Washington State 42, Washington 23. The Cougars, coming off a 40-3 defeat against Stanford, stunned No. 5 Washington in the Snow Bowl. The Huskies still went to the Rose Bowl, where they lost to Michigan 38-31. The Cougars beat Utah 31-28 in the Copper Bowl.
1981: At Washington 23, Washington State 10. This one was for a trip to the Rose Bowl, and it was No. 17 UW beating No. 14 WSU to go to Pasadena. The Huskies beat Iowa 28-0 in the Rose Bowl. The Cougars settled for the Holiday Bowl, and were beaten 38-36 by Brigham Young.
