Damon Huard, the analyst on Washington football radio broadcasts and a former quarterback for the Huskies and in the NFL, talked about the current UW team, Don James and much more in a live chat Wednesday with readers. Here are some highlights.
Q: What did you think of the whole injury-gate at Stanford?
Huard: It is part of the game. Whether it’s World Cup soccer, NFL football or college football, it’s been done before. I saw what I saw. It didn’t determine the outcome of the game, but there’s really no place for it, in my opinion.
Q: Who had the better arm, you or (brother) Brock?
Huard: Brock. But I could take a hit.
Q: Can you name one thing to watch for this game?
Huard: Statistically, we’re pretty even with them in a lot of categories. Oregon is plus-nine in turnover margin. We are at plus-two. Follow that statistic on Saturday and you’ll probably find who the winner is.
Q: How would the 1990-91 defense do in today’s game?
Huard: They would definitely do well. They would obviously be spread out all over the field. They were used to stacking eight guys in the box and coming with an all-out blitz and playing man coverage most snaps, which is hard to do today. But the physicality that team played with and the way they got after quarterbacks, they would still dominate.
Q: Would Don James succeed in today’s game?
Huard: Don James would succeed in any era. The discipline instilled in our program, the toughness and the confidence he exuded is what makes a great head coach. Our prayers are with him and his family.
Q: Who will be our QB next year in your opinion and why?
Huard: Cyler Miles is the clear No. 2 guy right now, but spring ball and training camp are going to make for some awesome competition. Jeff Lindquist gets better every day, and Troy Williams can really spin it and he’s super athletic. It should make for an interesting offseason.
Q: Thoughts about Kasen Williams and his chances at the next level?
Huard: Kasen is a pro in the way he practices and competes every day and works at his craft. His ability to make the tough catch, his athleticism, his hops, his hands all bode well at the next level.
Q: The Ducks keep playing that video clip from (the interception in) 1994. When are they going to put you in their Hall of Fame?
Huard: Haven’t you seen the statue of me outside Autzen Stadium?
Q: Did you ever play as yourself in Madden and what did you think?
Huard: I never did, but my kid has. He said I was too slow.
